ACS History: African Warrior Queen Muhumuza
I have written another piece on my blog, and this time it’s about how a traditional belief in a spirit of an ancient Queen spurred a whole resistance movement against colonialism in East Africa. It starts with the legend of Queen Nyabinghi in modern day Uganda/Rwanda, whose spirit was said to have reincarnated itself within many women several times after her death. One of the most important Nyabinghi reincarnates was a lady named Muhumuza, who was Queen of the Kingdom of Rwanda, until her husband was betrayed and killed by his stepmother, who was working with German colonial forces, in order to install a puppet government. Muhumuza was seen as a true reincarnate because she fought tirelessly in the early 20th century against colonialism in East Africa until her imprisonment and death at the hands of the British. Her legacy inspired many of her followers to continue her work in the anti-colonial struggle. I hope you enjoy reading this!
