The Oxford ACS Shadowing Day welcomes year 12 African and Caribbean students from across the country to Oxford University, and each student is given the chance to shadow a current Oxford African/Caribbean undergraduate. It is run in partnership with Oxford University Student Union’s own student-led programme, Target Schools.
Drawing on our own personal experiences, we recognise that few Afro-Caribbean students get the opportunity to visit Oxford. This leaves students with no personal insight into the realities of life as an Oxford student and only perpetuates the existing negative perceptions of the institution. The Oxford ACS Shadowing Day is our answer to this!
Each year a group of 30-40 students have the opportunity to participate in our Shadowing Day, which is comprised of two parts: a shadowing and an interactive session. During the morning students have the opportunity to shadow one of our members for the day. During the shadowing session students will have access to our tutorials (private weekly lessons), lectures, colleges (dotted all over the city) and even extra-curricular activities. Lunch is provided and there will also be an opportunity for students to take part in college tours. Following the shadowing session, students will then take part in the interactive session with students at an Oxford college. This session will endeavour to provide students with tips for making a successful application, subject choices and the far-reaching impact Oxford can have on students’ later endeavours in life.
The feedback from our first year of running has been overwhelmingly positive. Our Shadowing Day has proven to be an effective way of giving students an insight into the wide range of subjects available to them at a university level. More importantly, it gives us a chance to engage with the next generation leaving them equipped, informed and excited to take their next step into higher education. Consequently, we are determined to connect with even more students through our programme and continue to provide an authentic insight into life studying at Oxford. Our goal is to inspire these students to take that leap of faith and be confident in their applications!
